Our Story

The stylish new triangular building of Heathcote’s Valley Inn Tavern rose from the ruins of the pub that was destroyed in the September 2010 earthquake. It was the first rebuild in the city and although this is a new bar and restaurant, there is 140 years of history that has not been left behind.

Today, all that remains of the original pre-earthquake building is the deep brick-lined well, now transformed into a unique centre-bar feature, along with the stately old pepper trees that continue to shade the courtyard. Throughout the tavern, paintings, historic photographs, and memorabilia celebrating both the venue and the rich history of Heathcote create a warm and nostalgic atmosphere.

Our restaurant focuses on fresh, locally sourced ingredients prepared with a modern touch. From casual bar snacks to full restaurant dining, there’s something for every occasion. With menus changing regularly and daily chef specials on offer, there’s always something new to enjoy.

Owners Dean and Genaea Calvert would love to welcome you to enjoy the hospitality provided at the historic Valley Inn Tavern and become a part of our community.

The Valley Inn Tavern has been at the centre of the Heathcote Valley for over 140 years, and will continue to promote and support the wonderful community within which it lies.
